ASPHALT SHINGLES

Asphalt shingles cover more homes in America than any other roofing material. This roofing material is easy to install, provides excellent protection and it is often the least expensive roofing choice. Tugwell Roofing Co.offers a wide variety of asphalt shingle styles and colors that are an affordable option for your Redding roofing system.
Image

An asphalt shingle consists of a fiberglass or organic mat coated with asphalt, then covered with colored mineral granules for protection against the elements. Asphalt shingles are available in a range of grades. The better the grade, the longer the life expectancy, which can range from 15 to 30+ years. Here’s more about the advantages of this roofing material.

  • Easy to install. Asphalt shingles are among the easiest roofing materials to install. The size and flexibility of shingles make it easy to adapt them to any roof size and shape.
  • Low-maintenance. Many roofing materials require regular maintenance in order to retain their appearance and performance. But asphalt shingles are easy to keep clean, and can quickly be repaired or replaced if damaged.
  • Aesthetically pleasing. Asphalt shingles come in a wide selection of colors and textures. Our expert Redding roofing contractors can help create a design that will match the architecture and décor of your home. Certain asphalt shingles can mimic the look of wood, tile or slate, giving your home an elegant finish at a lower cost.
  • Lightweight. Although durable, asphalt shingles are still relatively light and will not place undue stress on your home’s roofing infrastructure. Heavier materials may require additional bracing or support before installation.
  • Affordable. An asphalt shingle roof can be one of the lowest cost options for roofing your home, giving you an excellent return on your roofing investment.

METAL ROOFING

Metal is available in a variety of aesthetically pleasing styles that can match any home or business architecture, with choices in design, pattern, and color, as well as choices in materials such as steel, aluminum, or copper.

Protection and Durability of a Metal Roof

The protection a metal roof provides is second to none. Whether the weather bombards you with heat, cold, water, ice, or wind, the elements are less likely to affect the integrity of your building with the superior defense of metal. The lightweight, interlocking panels are more wind and fire resistant. The shape and thickness of metal panels dissipate heat and resist cold, creating an energy efficient barrier between your property and the elements.

Improvements in metal paint and coatings prevent rust and corrosion while resisting fading to keep your roof like new for decades. In fact, the durability of a metal roof provides a shield for your property with a life expectancy greater than 50 years.

Quality Metal Roofing Installation You Can Trust

No matter what style or material you choose, the experts at Tugwell Roofing Co. are ready to help you get the roof that provides you with the best protection for your residential or commercial property. Our personalized service and attention to detail have more and more people in Redding, Mt. Shasta, Burney, Chico, Paradise and surrounding areas choosing Tugwell Roofing Co. for all of their Northern California roofing needs.

TILE ROOFING

Tile is among the most durable and environmentally sustainable Redding roofing choices. Most tile roofs have warranties ranging from 40-50 years, though some clay tile roofs in Europe have lasted hundreds of years. Tugwell Roofing Co. is the Redding roofing contractor with extensive experience in the installation of clay and concrete tile roofs. Here are more advantages of this roofing material.

The Difference Between Clay and Concrete Tile

Clay roof tiles are durable, strong and resistant to all weather conditions. They are baked in kilns at extremely high temperatures, which allow the tiles to retain their strength and color for up to 100 years. Clay tiles are available in an array of shapes, sizes and textures, and in many fade-free colors.

Concrete roof tiles have become a very popular choice due to their durability and lower cost. The average lifespan of concrete tiles is about 50 years, and cost is likewise about half that of clay tiles. Concrete tile is very durable and fire-resistant, and available in a wide range of colors and designs.

  • Superior durability and long service life
  • Low maintenance requirements and lifecycle cost
  • Wide choice of colors and patterns
  • Excellent insulating properties for energy savings
  • Fireproof with a Class-A rating
  • Environmentally friendly

Insulation

For those people too busy to read this full article, I will give you the secret right now. You can decrease your monthly energy bills, increase the lifespan of both your roof and your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system by increasing the insulation in your attic. BAM! There you go! Keep reading for more details.
Image

Quick return on your investment and money long term
Financial advisors and bankers will discuss the returns on your investment and how much money you make if you invest properly and sometimes they are accurate and other times they miss the mark.

Reducing your monthly spend on energy has an immediate and very gratifying impact on your savings. By increasing the insulation in your attic you can immediately decrease the amount of money you spend heating & cooling your home and decrease the costs associated with repairing and replacing both your roof and your heating, ventilation and air conditioning system. The long-term payoff is HUGE! You could see your energy bills go down by as much as 15-25% depending on the climate and current levels of insulation.

Redding, Red Bluff and Chico have hot weather for long periods
If you look at the U.S. Climate Data website for the average temperatures in Redding, Chico, and Red Bluff it is clear that these three areas are some of the consistently hottest spots in the United States. Northern California has broken many temperature records in the past, and even recognized on television as being the hottest area in California! Back on June 25, 2006 Redding got as high as 117 degrees and in July 20, 1988 it was even hotter at 118 degrees. Not to be outdone, Red Bluff got up to 121 degrees back in August of 1981 and Chico consistently breaks 100 degrees in the Summer months. Which is why you will find many homes in the North State with swimming pools. However, once the temperature is consistently 105+, swimming pools are now heated up, and no longer refreshing. This drives people inside their homes, and jacking up the AC to cool down. Sometimes forcing them to run their AC all day and night, just to keep the house at a comfortable level. This can add up to some serious monthly energy bills.

PG&E pricing
Pacific Gas & Electric services most of the people in Northern California and trying to determine their rates can be as tricky as filling out several tax forms. If you go to their website and read about their various Rate plans, you may become overwhelmed with the various ways they can charge for use of the energy they produce. The one thing that is consistent among all options is that the cost of energy is increasing year over year and there seems to be no end insight on when the price increases will ever slow down, let alone become fixed.

REU pricing
If you are lucky enough to be able to purchase electricity from the City of Redding, then currently you are paying a fixed price per kilowatt of energy. Although their rates are substantially lower than PG&E’s rates, REU’s rates have consistently increased year over year for over a decade and all indications are that energy rates will continue to increase in the future. Several local leaders have come up with plans to try and reduce the potential inflation in REU’s future, to include building and operating a solar farm to subsidize the energy creation necessary to power the area. Even if these ideas are pursued, energy prices will have to increase substantially over time.

R-value meaning
There is a common term used with insulation, windows and window coverings called their R-value. The term R-value, refers to:

“An insulating material’s resistance to conductive heat flow is measured or rated in terms of its thermal resistance or R-value — the higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness.” – Energy.gov

The higher the R-value of material the better the material is at not allowing heat to move through it. If you increase the R-value of your attic insulation you are going to lower the amount of energy that can travel through your ceiling and into your roof. This means it takes less energy to both cool your home and less energy to heat your home. So in the hot summer months you will not need to run your air conditioning system for nearly as long or have to set the temperature as low in order to keep it comfortable. Conversely, in the cooler winter months, you will be able to heat your home using less energy and running your heater less often or burning less wood in your fireplace or wood stove. Simply put, the higher the R-value of the insulation in your attic the lower your monthly heating and cooling bills.

Increase the lifespan of your roof
Another great side effect of a high R-value in your attic is reducing the stress put on your roof. When you combine our Tugwell Roofing Owens Corning insulation with a proper roof venting system like the GAF Cobra Vented Ridge system, you lower the temperature changes in your attic and keep them more consistent with the outside temperatures. This reduces the stress on your roofing materials to include the underlayment and roofing shingles, which in turn, increases their lifespan. By having proper insulation in your attic you will increase the life of your roof and reduce the costs associated with continued roof maintenance and eventual roof replacement.

Increase lifespan on your HVAC system
You can think about your HVAC system similar to the way you think about your automobile. The less wear and tear you put on your vehicle, the longer it will last. We often measure the life of a vehicle by how many miles are on the odometer. This gives us a pretty good indication of how much further we can use the vehicle before we have to start completely re-hauling it by replacing parts, getting the engine and transmission rebuilt, etc. Yet it is not just the mileage that is put on the vehicle, but also how “hard” the vehicle was used. This is what your tachometer is used for, measuring the rotations per minute or RPMs to measure the “stress” you are putting the engine and transmission under.

Similarly with your HVAC system you can think of mileage like the number of hours your HVAC system can run, there is a limit and at some point the “life” of the HVAC system will be reached and it will need to be replaced. Likewise, thinking of the RPMs of your vehicle and how hard the HVAC system has to work to cool or heat your home and this can have a dramatic negative effect on the overall life of your HVAC. When your home is properly insulated, the temperature fluctuations in your home are reduced and this means you will have to run your HVAC system less often (think less mileage) and for shorter periods of time (think lower RPMs) to control the interior temperature of your home. These factors determine how long your HVAC system will work before you start spending money on repairs and eventually replace the entire system.

Whole-House Energy Assessment
To determine whether you should add insulation to your home, you first need to determine how much insulation you already have in you home, and where it is located. Our Tugwell Roofing insulation team are highly qualified home energy estimators, and they will include an insulation check as part of the whole-house energy assessment. This audit will help us identify the areas of your home that are in need, so that we can provide you a free estimate. At Tugwell Roofing we know how to build, protect, and maintain all roofing systems, gutters, and insulation to ensure maximum roof life-expectancy. Our team will make sure your installation is done right, the first time.

Built-up Roofing (BUR)

Built-up roofing (BUR) is a very economical choice for flat roofs. It is composed of three or more layers of fiberglass membrane coated with hot asphalt, with a top layer of gravel or mineral blends to protect the surface from weather, UV rays and mechanical damage.

Modified Bitumen Roofing

One of the most common residential low-slope systems, modified bitumen combines hot asphalt (bitumen) with plastic and rubber additives which are layered between sheets of fiberglass or polyester. Its lifespan is determined by the number of layers installed.Modified bitumen roofing exhibits many characteristics of BUR, yet affords the ease of application of a single-plysystem. These membranes are resistant to heavy traffic, punctures and tears.

EPDM Single-Ply Membrane

Often referred to as rubber roofing, EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) membrane is a rubber-based product with a proven reputation for durability. Varied application techniques include ballasted, fully adhered and mechanically fastened, allowing EPDM roofing systems to be applied to virtually any roof surface.

PVC/TPO Single-Ply Membrane

Thermoplastic single-ply membranes represent the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. commercial roofing market. Short for polyvinyl chloride, PVC is a sturdy, single-ply roofing membrane proven to perform well on both residential and commercial roofs. TPO, or thermoplastic polyolefin, is a newer heat-welded, single-ply roofing membrane that costs less than PVC and offers a 10-year rating. TPO reflects solar heat, making it a popular choice where energy efficiency is important. Both PVC and TPO are aesthetically pleasing, lightweight and highly resistant to wear.

Metal Roofing

While expensive compared to other commercial systems, metal requires little maintenance and often lasts 50-75 years. When it comes to fire, wind and impact resistance, metal roofing stands alone. With reflective coatings applied, metal can also be used to keep utility costs low. Its recycled content, recyclability and energy efficiency qualifies it as a “green” building product.

Storm damage and insurance claims

When your roof suffers damage from a storm, you can’t wait for the weather to let up before making repairs. Water entering your home can cause serious and expensive structural damage. The professional Redding roofers from Tugwell Roofing Co. are specially trained to locate storm damage and take quick action to minimize the entry of water. We’ll return when the weather calms down to make a full assessment and recommend additional repairs. In many cases, we can restore your Redding roofing system without the expense of a complete roof replacement.

The company to call on for expert storm damage repairs

If your roof has survived a hailstorm without visible damage, that doesn’t mean the damage isn’t there. When hail hits your roof, it can bruise or crack the shingle mat and allow water to slowly seep into your home. This may not happen the day after the storm, but over time the water will find its way in. It is difficult to determine whether a shingle roof needs to be replaced after a hailstorm because damage is not readily apparent to the untrained eye. Our experts in Redding roof repairs will take the time to check the entire roof structure and gutter system for hail damage, so you will not have unwelcome surprises in the future.

We can assist with insurance claims

Tugwell Roofing Co. also has experience in working with insurance companies and adjusters, and can help coordinate your insurance claim to make sure you receive the full compensation to which you are entitled. This includes complete documentation of Redding storm damage and repair estimates for insurance purposes.

Gutters

A well-designed roof keeps water from entering your home and transports rainwater to the roof’s edge. From there, a quality gutter system finishes the job by conducting the water down and away from vulnerable areas. Without gutters, water spilling off the roof will cause damage to siding, windows, doors, landscaping, concrete and masonry, and the foundation of your home. Water pooling around your home’s foundation can stain walls, rot wood framing, flood the basement and even crack a cement foundation.

A properly functioning gutter and downspout system from Tugwell Roofing Co. is essential to prevent water from entering your home and causing flooding and structural damage. Gutters and downspouts must be the right size to accommodate large volumes of water without filling up and overflowing, all while looking proportional to your home. Our roofing systems include a seamless gutter system that is properly designed, fabricated and installed to provide the necessary capacity to handle almost any amount of runoff. We offer complete Redding gutter services, including:

  • Gutter replacement
  • Gutter repairs
